NOVA

How processed is the product?

HOW TO READ ITCategory 1–4 · lower is less processed
01
WHY IT MATTERS

The problem

A high intake of ultra-processed food has been associated in research with adverse health outcomes, but processing level and nutritional quality are not the same thing.

02
HOW CONSUPEDIA BUILDS IT

Data & method

The NOVA system groups foods from category 1, unprocessed or minimally processed, to category 4, ultra-processed. It was developed by researchers at the University of São Paulo.

03
WHAT THE RESULT MEANS

Interpretation

Lower NOVA categories mean less processing. NOVA does not evaluate nutritional composition, so it should be shown alongside health and nutrition information.

Use nova intelligence where decisions happen.

Consupedia delivers the parameter together with the product record, method and available provenance—ready for your own systems and customer experiences.
